Deep Tissue vs. Relaxation Massage: Which Is Right for You?

·5 min read

One of the most common questions we hear at Second Wind: "Should I get deep tissue or relaxation?" It's a fair question — and the right answer depends entirely on what your body is asking for right now.

Both are legitimate paths to feeling better. But they're designed to do different things, and knowing the difference helps you walk away from your session feeling exactly what you came for.

What Is Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage uses slow, deliberate pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. The strokes are firm and intentional — targeting the areas where tension, adhesions, or chronic tightness have built up over time.

It's particularly effective for:

  • Chronic back and neck pain
  • Sports injuries and muscle strains
  • Postural problems caused by overworked muscles
  • Trigger points (tight knots that refer pain to other areas)
  • Recovery from repetitive strain or overuse

Deep tissue work can feel intense in the moment — but it should never feel sharp or unmanageable. A good therapist stays in communication with you throughout. Some mild soreness the next day is normal and typically a sign the right tissue was addressed.

What Is Relaxation Massage?

Relaxation massage — sometimes called Swedish massage — uses longer, flowing strokes and lighter to medium pressure across the full body. The goal is to calm the nervous system, reduce overall tension, and create a genuine sense of rest and renewal.

It's the right choice when:

  • You're carrying mental stress more than physical pain
  • You want a full-body experience without targeted work on specific areas
  • You're new to massage and want a comfortable starting point
  • You simply need to slow down and decompress

At Second Wind, relaxation sessions include warm hot towels, a peppermint scalp massage, and targeted magnesium cream application — intentional additions that deepen the experience.

How to Choose

Here's a simple way to think about it:

  • Pain, tightness, or a specific area bothering you? Therapeutic / deep tissue.
  • Stress, fatigue, or just need to unwind? Relaxation.
  • Not sure? We'll guide you through it during the intake conversation.

It's also worth knowing that a single session can blend both approaches. If you're carrying tension in your shoulders but want the rest of the experience to feel restorative, we can work that way too.

Same Pricing, Different Intentions

At Second Wind, therapeutic and relaxation massage are offered at the same rate — sessions run 60, 90, or 120 minutes at $95, $150, and $195 respectively. The session length you choose often matters as much as the type. Shorter sessions are great for focused work; longer sessions give us time to address the full picture.

If you're still unsure which direction is right for you, mention it when you book and we'll make sure the session is built around what you actually need.
